Many make the pilgrimage to Pearl Harbor where the massive USS Missouri stands sentinel over the watery grave of the USS Arizona. They are the bookends of World War II and symbolic of the nations wartime involvement. The USS Bowfin, the retaliatory sub called the Pearl Harbor Avenger, is there too. All have a new tour of duty as dynamic memorials.
ARIZONA MEMORIAL: Its a solemn place, this tomb of 1,100 crewmen who lost their lives on December 7, 1941. The deck of the ship lies six feet below the surface and oil still weeps from the engine room. Completed in 1961, the 184-foot long memorial crosses the Arizonas mid-section. A flag flies from a pole attached to its severed mainmast. While waiting for the Navys free shuttle ride to the memorial, see a historic film and explore the museum with its military memorabilia.
