Upcountry Maui

Upcountry Maui - Vineyards, ranches and farms flank the cool slopes of Haleakala. The communities of Makawao, Kula and Ulupalakua offer a different experience.

Makawao, Kula and Ulupalakua

Cool and lofty, upcountry Maui seems like a bit of heaven. Clouds swirl atop pastoral hills dotted with horses and cattle. Alive with gardens, cool upcountry Maui grows famous Kula onions, Tedeschi wines and protea. The quickest route is via Haleakala Highway 37.

Makawao is a former cowboy town where you can still see the hitchin’ posts. It’s gone holistic and a modern-day wrangler can rustle up a polenta pizza while cowgirls chase away the blues at the body works clinic.
Home to a massive ranch, plus vineyards, Ulupalakua has an interesting history. There’s an old jail, a restored King Kalakaua’s cottage with tasting room and museum and the cannon Capt. James Makee used in the mid-1800s to fire salutes to ships anchored in Makena Bay.
Kula stretches between Makawao and Ulupalakua below Haleakala National Park. Protea—the exotic plant that thrives in Maui’s upcountry—can be found at Kula Botanical Gardens and Kula Lodge on Highway 377. It’s also sold at farm markets on Highway 378, before the entrance to Haleakala National Park. Produce and flower farms, restaurants and craft shops lie along Highways 37 and 377.
