Paia, Maui

Paia - Windsurfing is king in this town of boutiques, eateries and water activity vendors . Nearby is Ho’okipa Beach Park where surfing sailors harness wind to ride waves.
Surfing is to Hawaii what skiing is to Colorado. In a couple of hours, you can learn to surf or windsurf. Lessons with trained pros start with practice on the beach before hanging 10 on the water. Depending on wave conditions, watch local surfers south of Lahaina at mile marker 12 on Highway 30 at “Thousand Peaks” or Honolua Bay in Kapalua. Surfing was declared the official state individual sport in July 1998.
Windsurfing is another popular sport on Maui. Using a sail attached to a surfboard, wave riders skim the ocean surface. Daredevils do aerial maneuvers while jumping waves. See this exciting sport at Ho’okipa Beach in Paia—the location for numerous contests and reputedly the world’s windsurfing capital—and Mai Poina Oe Lau Beach Park in Kihei. Windsurfing shops have schools that will have you sailing in no time. Watch beginners at Kanaha Beach Park in Kahului. For a surf update, call 244-8934, ext. 1521
