| Surfing is to Hawaii what skiing is to Colorado. In a couple of hours, you can learn to surf or windsurf. Lessons with trained pros start with practice on the beach before hanging 10 on the water. Depending on wave conditions, watch local surfers south of Lahaina at mile marker 12 on Highway 30 at Thousand Peaks or Honolua Bay in Kapalua. Surfing was declared the official state individual sport in July 1998. |

| Windsurfing is another popular sport on Maui. Using a sail attached to a surfboard, wave riders skim the ocean surface. Daredevils do aerial maneuvers while jumping waves. See this exciting sport at Hookipa Beach in Paiathe location for numerous contests and reputedly the worlds windsurfing capitaland Mai Poina Oe Lau Beach Park in Kihei. VISIT PAIA
A jumble of multi-colored clapboard stores are filled with boutiques, coffee shops, galleries and surf shops in Paia (Map I:E19). The former plantation town serves as a pit stop for visitors en route to Hana or nearby Hookipa Beach Park.
