Tree Tunnel/Old Koloa Town

Tree Tunnel/ Old Koloa Town- Fragrant eucalyptus provide a canopy of green en route to the state’s oldest sugar plantation town. Take Highway 520-Maluhia Road.
What do you do with 500 leftover trees? Plant a tree tunnel. Old timers say that’s how the Tree Tunnel on Highway 520-Maluhia Road came to be. Somebody had extra “swamp mahogany” trees and donated them to the county; people pitched in to plant. Today, the mature trees stretch for more than a mile. Hurricanes have damaged the “roof” of the tunnel, the trees don’t intermesh at the top anymore.

Take the Tree Tunnel to get to Koloa and Poipu from the island’s east side. Roll down the windows and breathe the heady, spicy fragrance. A native of Australia, the robustus is one of 50 eucalyptus species introduced into Hawaii for reforestation, timber, medicine and floral arrangements.

Koloa boasts being the state’s oldest plantation settlement. There’s a line of shops and restaurants in remodeled sugar plantation buildings. Poke around at the Koloa History Center, open 9 a.m.-9 p.m. daily next to the Salvation Army Church. An outside directory details the layout of historical buildings and landmarks.
