Wailua Falls - Drive up to these two falls on Highway 583.
Fed by 40 feet of rain each year, the Wailua River has a mighty presence. It snakes through Kauais east side with numerous points of interest accessible by car, tour boat or kayak. At the south end of the river is the spectacular Wailua Falls. Its located outside Hanamaulu on Highway 583.
In Wailua, turn off Highway 56 at Kuamoo Road and drive to several scenic overlooks. On your left is the river region; stop to read about its history. Drive further and park on the right for a stop at Opaekaa Falls at the rivers north fork.
Get on the river to see its most magical attraction, Fern Grotto. This mammoth lava cave is curtained with cascading ferns in a cool, lush tropical hideaway. Motorized boat tours, with on-board entertainment, are available at Wailua Marina.
