Puuhonua O Honaunau-Visit the sacred site where law breakers were purified and ancient Hawaiians sought political asylum.

Step back to the days of ancient Hawaii at Puuhonua O Honaunau. Thought to be built in the 12th century, it was a transition site for law breakers and those seeking political asylum. Overlooking Honaunau Bay, it’s the finest example of a puuhonua (place of refuge) in the islands.

A walk through the national historic park is easy; get a brochure at the visitor desk. Orientation talks are at 10, 10:30 and 11 a.m., 2:30, 3 and 3:30 p.m. daily. A sacred place to Hawaiians, the park should be treated with respect. Open 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., (808)328-2288.
