Top of the World
Mauna Kea Summit-Astronomers consider Mauna Kea the planets premiere sky-watching site. Check out the heavens during an out-of-this-world activity.
Nearly a dozen observatories are rewriting the theory of the cosmos atop Hawaiis tallest peak, Mauna Kea. Meaning White Mountain, Mauna Kea often has a snowy winter summit. In the middle of the Pacific at 13,800 feet, unique conditions make it the planets top astronomical site.
Named after the island son who perished in the Challenger tragedy, Mauna Keas Onizuka Center for International Astronomy has limited visitor services at 9,300 feet. Phone (808)969-3218 for weather and (808)961-2180 for visitor programs. Car rental agencies have driving restrictions; see tour at top right.
In Waimea, Keck Observatory has a visitor display open 8:30 a.m-4:30 p.m. daily on Highway 19.
