Kohala Coast

Fantasy, Fun Resorts

Kohala Coast - Swim with dolphins, pamper yourself at a spa, discover petroglyphs and tee up at the home of the Senior Skins Game.

You don’t have to check in to check out the Big Island’s Kohala Coast. Fabulous resorts, sitting like oases in a desert of lava, are beautiful to walk through.
Enjoy the impeccable furnishing, museum quality artifacts, massive ceramics adorned with tropical flowers and meandering lagoon pools. If you don’t want to walk, hop a ride on a venetian launch or tram at the Hilton Waikoloa Village. Views from the lobby at the Orchid at Mauna Lani and the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel are fabulous.
The spas, restaurants, shops and many in-house activities at Kohala Coast resorts are open to the public and staff await to indulge your every whim. Try the plexi-cushion tennis courts and lava-lined links. Tee up at the home of the Senior Skins Game at the Mauna Lani Resort. There’s a new Seaside Putting Course at the Hilton Waikoloa Village.
Other Kohala Coast attractions include the Big Island’s number one beach, Hapuna Beach State Park. Everything about it is perfect: sand, swimming and snorkeling areas, shade trees, picnic pavilions and parking. For Hawaiian history, you can’t beat Puukohola National Historic Park. The massive temple was built by Kamehameha for his war god. Staff explain the site, 882-7218.

Petroglyphs, ancient rock carving used for communication, are concentrated on the lava-lined Kohala Coast. The Waikoloa Kings’ Shops hosts a free tour 8:30 a.m. Sat., meet at the food pavilion. At the Mauna Lani Resort, follow petroglyph road signs leading to Holoholokai Beach Park. Take a one-mile walk to a viewing platform overlooking the Puako Petroglyph Archaeological Preserve. Get a resort map at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel, 885-6622.

Transportation is available between Kona and the Kohala Coast via the Kona Coast Shuttle, 329-1688.
