Honokaa/Waipio Valley

Worth Exploring—You Can’t Visit One Without the Other

Honokaa/Waipio Valley-Honokaa is a browser’s bonanza with antique emporiums and yummy Portuguese malasadas; nearby Waipio Valley is breathtaking.

WAIPIO VALLEY: Known for its tranquil beauty and isolation, Waipio is six miles long and a mile wide. It has a handful of residents, fields of taro and fiddlehead ferns, a black sand beach and twin Hiilawe Falls. Get a glimpse of the valley from a 900-foot perch at the Waipio Valley Lookout. Access into the valley is by four-wheel drive, a guided tour or a hardy hiking trail.

HONOKAA: Sitting on a hillside just off Highway 19, Honokaa commands spectacular ocean views. Hometown retailers and crafters occupy pastel-painted stores in this long-time town. Men mill around the two, old-timey barber shops while a lucky fella gets a “do” atop an antique barber chair. You’ll forget this is the 1990s.

Antique hounds can sniff out a find at one of several stores capitalizing on collectibles. Swap at places as interesting as their wares. Sample fresh baked goods, including piping hot Portuguese malasadas—a sugary donut without the hole. See what’s in the Filipino Ono Halo Halo.

Points of interest include the 1904 Hongwanji Mission, next door Lady of Lourdes Church and 1930’s People Theatre. Honokaa was the hot spot for sugar plantation camps along the Hamakua Coast; the large Andrade Building is a former dance hall where men paid a dime to “taxi dance” with a local girl.
